Nara Nara

Nara is in the southern part of the main island of Honshu, south of Kyoto. Nara was the Imperial capital of Japan from the year 710 AD to 784 AD before a ten-year interlude when Nagaoka was briefly the capital, after which Heian Kyo (present-day Kyoto) became the Imperial capital for more than a thousand years.

Today, Nara is essentially a giant park, with temples, gardens, and deer wandering all over the place. Eight of Nara's temples and shrines comprise a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The picture above is the garden of Isuien, photographed on a trip to Nara in 2002.
