Oonuma Lake Oonuma

Lake Oonuma is one of three beautiful lakes in what's called a Quasi-National Park in Hokkaido. The area around Lake Oonuma provides for hiking, biking, boating, sight-seeing, camping, and many other activities. From most viewpoints around Lake Oonuma, the old and very distinctive volcanic cone of Komagatake dominates the horizon.

Lake Oonuma

You can get to Lake Oonuma and its parks in about twenty minutes or so by train from Hakodate. Be sure to get out at Lake Oonuma and not Oonuma town itself, although the walk from the town station to the lake station is only around fifteen minutes.

You can rent a variety of different types of boats, from row-boats through pedal-powered boats through power boats. Many of the islands have mooring facilities so you can paddle your boat to an island, tie up, and enjoy a picnic in the middle of the lake.

There are hundreds of islands of all sizes dotted throughout the lake. In the area of the lake closest to the station (and all the tourist facilities) there are a collection of islands connected by bridges, so you can enjoy a two- or three-hour walk through those islands and get many varied views of the lake.

Here we are at Lake Oonuma on a lovely August afternoon with the backdrop of islands and Komagatake.

Lake Oonuma has extensive areas of Lotus flowers growing in the placid waters in the shelter of the islands.
