Marimo Akan Marimo

Lake Akan is home to a strange type of green algae that forms spherical colonies, and is one of only a few places in the world where these algae spheres form. The spheres are called Marimo, which means roughly “bouncy play ball”. The government maintains a Marimo research station on an island in Lake Akan, and we visited the research station to see Marimo up close.
