Kushiro Kushiro

Kushiro is a city and fishing port located in the south east of Hokkaido. We made Kushiro our star-base for visiting Lake Akan and Lake Mashu. Here we are at the overlook above Kushiro Shitsugen (wet-lands), the largest wet-lands area in Japan.

Kushiro Wetlands

Kushiro Shitsugen looks pretty far away from everywhere, so how do you get there? Well, there happens to be a railway station hidden down on the floor of the valley behind us in the picturethat's the beauty of train travel in Japan.

Kushiro Fish Market

Kushiro is one of Japan's major fishing ports, and one of the tourist attractions in Kushiro is the central Kushiro Fish Market. The fish market is about a five-minute walk from Kushiro railway station.

Inside Kushiro Fish Market, there might not be anybody at the information desk, but you will be greeted by the Kushiro Fish Cats.

Welcome to Kushiro Fish Market

A unique attraction at Kushiro Fish Market is a “build your own Chirashi-Zushi fish snack“.

First you buy your bowl of sushi rice

Then you buy the toppings of your choice.

And you sit in the dining area next to the crab tank to enjoy your snack.

We did a photographic walk-through of Kushiro Fish Market. Here are just two of the memorable (and completely delicious) images.

This stall specialises in fish eggs.

Tarako (Cod roe)
Tobiko (Flying Fish roe)
Masago (Capelin roe)
Kazunoko (Herring roe)...

And for the politically incorrect among you, this stall specialises in Whale meat.
