Nijo Castle Nijo Castle

Nijo Castle was built between 1601 and 1626 by members of the Tokugawa Shogunate to serve as their Kyoto residence. Today, Nijo Castle contains its two rings of fortifications, Ninomaru Palace, the ruins of Honmaru Palace, and several beautiful gardens. Just like the Heian Shrine, any time of the year is good for a visit, but cherry blossom time adds that special colour

A special part of Nijo Castle (at least from our point of view) is the Seiryuen Tea Garden. There is a small tea house where you can obtain green tea and small confections. The view across the water and stones with lawns and trees in the background seems to induce a feeling of tranquility.
